I admit to zero knowledge about this as well, wasn't it an anime-type show on Nikelodeon?

That's Avatar: The Last Airbender which has nothing to do with this, though it is being made into a film by M. Night.

In director James Cameron's original script treatment of Avatar, a man tries to make his way as a miner by combining with an alien during an interplanetary war in which humans can make themselves manifest by possessing alien bodies – avatars.[2]

When Avatar was titled "Project 880", a casting call was put out in June 2006 with a plot description provided, saying, "In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture."[3]

In December 2006, Cameron described Avatar as "a futuristic tale set on a planet 200 years hence [...] an old-fashioned jungle adventure with an environmental conscience [that] aspires to a mythic level of storytelling."[4] The January 2007 press release described the film: "Avatar is also an emotional journey of redemption and revolution. It is the story of a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in biodiversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival," and "We're creating an entire world, a complete ecosystem of phantasmagorical plants and creatures, and a native people with a rich culture and language."

Watched T2 again last night on Sciifi - pumped me so hard for this. I really hope its Camerons return to form, T2 was his last great film to me

Pretty much all of his films are great to me, in varying degrees. I don't think he's had a miss yet, though he's not incredibly prolific with his output, to say the least.

His basic description of that battle sounds exactly like the end of Phantom Menace, but of course it's all in the execution

A little birdie informed me that some 20minutes finished footage were shown to press or some media groups and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Also, the little birdie was my brother.

I love how 'Avatar:The Last Airbender' had to change its name to just 'The Last Airbender' for the sake of Cameron's film. Cameron gets the name he wants, when he wants it dammit.
