Mithril Shirt Replica

Now I don't know the full details of the new Weta LOTR licence, so I don't know if it's possible, but i've thought one prop replica we've never had is Bilbo/Frodo's mithril shirt. Now i'm putting together my Hobbit display, and it doesn't seem complete without it.

So would Weta be able to create this for fans? Is there any interest at all?

But Gandalf took care of that Balrog, so as long as you know where the mines are (which no doubt Weta do), it's a Mithril free for all.


A Mithril Shirt replica could be interesting, depending on a few factors.

If you don't mind the orcs...

It would not be cheap, fauz silver chain mail. And the chain would be a lot smaller than regular chain mail

But it would look lovely

Not quite what I had in mind!

It doesn't have to be proper chainmaille, it's just for display (for me), so they could use that maille they developed during LOTR (tenzan was it?), so it has the look but not the weight.

I just thought with the Peter Lyon swords and Gandalf's cloak, they might have the licence to create other props/clothing.

And I would want it hobbit sized personally, to display with other hobbity items. I don't plan on wearing it, for disco or otherwise

It's not something I'd buy but it would certainly be a cool item. Not that wild of a suggestion perhaps considering they've done Gandalf's cloak

Here's a bit of info I copied onto my computer (along with other info), off a thread on a different forum years ago (can't remember where ):

“The Mithril vest is a big cheat,” said Richard Taylor, who directed the physical effects and costumes in The Lord of the Rings movies.

“We did consider it, we did ponder it, and we were stumped by it,” Taylor said. “This is the first publication where I’ve admitted how tragically we failed to do something special. Just from a fan base, we wanted to be able to tell a neat story in the future about how cool the materials were that we investigated. We were hoping that we could somehow weave titanium twine or something like that. But it was not to be.”

In the end, the Mithril was made of lightweight, stainless-steel chain mail used for butchers’ gloves. That mail was finer than the movie’s craftsmen would have been able to produce, Taylor said, and looked appropriate when sprayed with a pearlescent paint.

So there we go.

I'd be happy to splash out for one, it would make a magnificent center piece for any collection.

but I doubt it will happen, unless they get the licence after hobbit comes out.

I would have been all over the cloak if cloaks were still acceptable to wear in public.
