Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s got the biggest boobs of all? Ah yes, that wonderful world of Adam Hughes (AH!) where every member of the female persuasion test the mightiness of their bras at all times. It’s no wonder why the fanboys go gaga over his work. Sideshow’s smartly realized an entire line of statues- “Comiquettes”- devoted to Hughes’ renderings of these superwomen. Aside from bringing some nice eye candy to the statue world, it’s also the perfect example of how a singular strong artistic direction can works wonders in building a cohesive feel that collectors crave.

But before we delve in, the title is a bit of a misnomer. Rather than chase the arbitrarily ill-defined and randomly subjective idea of ‘best’, we go for a much clearer criteria: Which Comiquette is most faithful to the control art?

#6 BLACK QUEEN
Adam Hughes Black Queen
In addition to a tired, sleepy-eyed portrait that bears little resemblance to that seen in the control art, she’s also got strange looking hair. It’s not the only one of the line that deviates from its AH! counterpart, but it’s the most severe. To sculptor Tim Miller’s credit, most of these deficiencies might lie entirely upon the paint apps. Even the bodice, which is shown to be glossier in the art doesn’t look quite right. To Sideshow’s credit, this is the sole AH! comiquette that strays very far from target….

#5 MARY JANE
Adam Hughes Mary Jane
….With that said, it clearly gets much more difficult to rank from here on out. As demonstrated with Black Queen, Sideshow has a tendency to add extra years to AH!’s ladies. Though it’s much less drastic here, this affliction plagues MJ as well. The statue is more ‘come hither’ than the sunny key art intends, but the result still manages to be pleasing. Also notice the much more elongated body as compared with the more voluptuous original. There’s clearly a ‘girl next door’ vibe that does not survive the transition.

#4 ROGUE
Adam Hughes Rogue

Comparing to AH!’s original, Sideshow’s portrait looks like another person entirely. It’s not that the result is unappealing, quite the opposite, but facts are facts. As was the case with MJ, they’ve removed all hints of cuteness for a sexualized rendition. A ‘problem’ that few would see as such, no doubt. They did get the shiny boobs just right.

#3 BLACK CAT
Adam Hughes Black Cat

Sideshow’s Black Cat is very close the Adam Hughes’ art indeed. Even the portrait is pretty good by any standards, from what we can see of it in the art. However, there’s a very prominent, seductive lateral lean to Black Cat’s body that’s almost entire discarded in its translation in statue form. Is it a deal breaker? Not really.

#2 EMMA FROST
Adam Hughes Emma Frost

You can tell sculptor Andy Bergholtz paid careful attention to the body lines of Hughes’ White Queen. Even the face I imagine, would be pretty close if it were painted more similarly to the key— Sideshow forgoes the heavy eye shadow in AH!’s art for starters. Why? Your guess is as good as ours. The slab of hair is also not as good as it could be. Those issues aside, this might just be the most faithful SS AH!.

#1 SHE-HULK

Adam Hughes She-Hulk

As good as many of the other Sideshow AH! Comiquettes are, it’s safe to say none of them look better than the art on which they’re based. She-Hulk might very well be the first exception. Her costume is laid out better here, while she is more naturally posed with a cuter face, and even better hair. Lastly, the green lady’s even managed to leap to 3D without aging in the process. The caveat to all of this of course, is that what’s been shown of Hughes’ artwork at this stage is not final. Even so, it’s safe to say sculptor Tim Miller captures the fun and spirit originally intended 100 percent.

Thanks for the visit, Charles. Great post here. The side by side comparison between the art and actual statue showed some areas where each could be improved. Seems that AH hair is the waterloo of most sculptors but the Wonder Woman statues from DC Direct seems to have it down pat.

While I like MJ, I think it doesn’t look quite like the AH! control art. Emma is the closest one and I totally agree with your comments on how it could be improved. I look forward to seeing She-Hulk in person.

Cheers patman, thanks for check it out. I agree that improvement could be found in most of them, yet I still feel they’ve done a magnificent job overall.

I will be taking a closer look at She-Hulk and the others at SDCC, always fun!
