It seems ages already since this beauty was shown off at Comic-Con, but Weta’s finally put up their first Halo piece for order- Cortana.

As I was prepared for a price of $250-$300 from what seem to be ever-rising cost of collectibles, the $225 ’special’ pre-order price comes as a nice surprise. There a certain element of beauty here that sets it apart from the other Chief / ugly space creature pieces, which the masses have definitely responded to. Edition size to be determined.

Elvis Premium Format | Artist: Mat Falls | Edition Size: 500

Dont be cruel, to a heart that’s true…

It’s difficult to sugarcoat the cold reception to Sideshow’s first go at The King of Rock and Roll. The unfavorable initial impression (amongst the hardcore collectors) is one it’s struggled to recover from. This all has certainly made me quite keen to give this some proper face time.

As seems to be part and parcel with the license, Sideshow is representing the stages of his life in chronological snapshots starting with ‘young Elvis’, circa 1956. The line has already since been furthered with a 68 Comeback Special premium format, and one assumes a Vegas-era piece to be in the works.

To start, I firmly believe the separate editions should’ve been nixed. The piece makes more sense and is compositionally better with the exclusive guitar. At least they offered a discount for the regular edition ($280 vs. $300), but the split hardly seem to do Sideshow or the collectors any real favors.

The mixed-media checklist: All of the clothing, barring the socks and shoes, are made of fabric, leaving most else sculpted. The blazer fits somewhat awkwardly and is fairly snug to the body, so there isn’t much leeway for primping. I do dislike when a mixed-media element is tacked on purely for the sake of doing so- I can point to a few premium formats that were not best served by this mentality. Here, though I don’t think the fit of the production piece is spectacular, the color and luster of the fabric bring something to the table which isn’t possible to replicate on a painted sculpture. Hard to argue against.

The mic stand comes attached to the left hand separate from the body, and the wire which wraps around is ‘real’ wire, as opposed to sculpted. The top of the mic head can be swiveled, though it never stays upright due to tension or gravity.

The pose is just what you’d expect of an early-era Elvis, one which few would have trouble recognizing even as a basic silhouette. Still, there’s no illusion that people buy statues, famous person statues, on the strength of any pose alone. The portrait is where the bread’s buttered, and here’s my observations on Mat Fall’s take on Elvis.

There’s something not quite right about the eyes, but it’s not easy to pinpoint. Certainly, the upper lids from some angles suffer from a puffiness exacerbated no doubt, by the fact that his lashes could not be rightly represented short of a Princess Leia PF style implementation. For better or worse here, it was not. Think Sideshow ever seriously considered it?

Do your best Elvis. Chances are you, or any would-be impersonator, would begin with a lip snarl and a “thank ya verrah much“. Yet this oft-imitated (and abused) trait is barely present here, if at all. His smile also comes off toothy as his choppers are far too delineated, with gum traveling to the bottom of the teeth in a few instances and painted as such.

I believe it’s a combination of all of these things that contributed to people’s complaints of his ‘goofy’ expression. Still, Mat has managed to do some very things very well here- like capture the unorthodox shape of Elvis’ face for example. The cheeks look spot on. The portrait is plenty Presley in the quarter-profile angles.

What it comes to, in subjectively terms, is that Sideshow’s Elvis is too ‘aw-shucks’ and wholesome, and lacking the certain sexiness and sense of danger that the man projected, particularly during his rise, when America shielded the precious virgin eyes of its youth from the man’s ‘perverted’ shakes and gyrations. In striving for the broadest possible appeal, Sideshow’s Elvis Presley plays it safe its idealized vision.

That’s all right, mama—- is it alright with you?

Collecting, is becoming less and less of a niche.

How else to explain the prominent lead of “Figurines” in the poll conducted by Street Fighter 4 developers, Capcom? The survey seeks opinions on what should be included in the upcoming “Collector Edition” of the blockbuster title for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

It’s huge, the way collectibles are seeping into the mainstream more and more over time. Already a staple in the home video world, they are now becoming commonplace in gaming as well, with successively more elaborate ‘collector editions’ in the pipeline.

Recent examples include Amazon.com exclusive editions of Gears of War 2 (life-size Lancer prop gun) and Fallout 3 (Pip Boy 300 clock). Street Fighter 4 is only the latest confirmation of this trend- if the planet’s #1 online retailer producing its own independent collector’s editions of video games wasn’t confirmation enough.

Amongst hardcore gamers, where collectibles are usually viewed as fluff, its lead over actual game content represents a new paradigm of thinking. If Sideshow’s on the ball, they’d make sure gift cards were in every copy of SF4 to capitalize on this perfect gateway to the Pop Culture Shock Street Fighter statues under their umbrella of distribution.

Other options to fall by the wayside include the more practical staples: t-shirts and strategy guides. To place a vote, hit up Capcom’s Street Fighter 4 home page. I got mine in.

Bowen Marrina Aragorn LSB Namor Claws Tank Alien Z

It’s amazing to me, particularly looking at this week’s newsletter, just how diversified Sideshow’s distributing portfolio is nowadays. In fact, 3rd party manufacturers may actually have been the majority here. One stop shop for pop culture collectibles? I suspect that’s the goal.

The most notable news from the home front of course, is the full reveal of the polarizing Aragorn legendary scale bust and the tease of a Namor comiquette, purportedly that of accomplished sculptor Tony Cipriano. This representation of the 69 year-old (!) comic book staple has thus far been met with startling apathy!

I had always held out some hope that Peter Jackson’s Halo film project would see the light of day, despite its vanishing act. I saw the Halo short films by Neil Blomkamp as a reel to the studios, as assurance that it was safe to put the money back on the table. On the other hand, the possibility of the scenario being “Well, the film’s not happening, what should do with all this stuff?” also seemed equally real, but my optimism held. News of other Halo film projects proceeding ahead be damned!

As you’ll hear in the latest Weta Cast from Richard Taylor himself:

As everyone listening in knows, we very sadly had the Halo film that we had been working on for so many months disappear. For various reasons, it didn’t get made last year.

With the man’s remarks on the situation, I can finally put that idea to bed. Hollywood, that was as good of a chance as you’d ever had with Halo (which in itself had a great chance of being the first ‘good’ video game movie), and you blew it, nice going guys. The interview is centered on Mr. Taylor’s art direction role on Weta’s new Halo collectibles, but it branches off in all sorts of interesting directions.

There’s also a nice interview (and if you’re like me– an introduction) with Weta Workshop designer Paul Tobin conducted by Daniel Falconer. You’ll not find better designer on designer action for the money!

And finally, a few of the miniature Goliathon 83 Rayguns are now available to order from their site, should you be in the UK or NZ.

This sculpture by Pablo Viggiano proved extremely popular at Comic-Con, going so far as to prompt some proclamations of best premium format shown! (my personal vote goes to Thor)

The exclusive edition features a bonus swappable helmed head, and is sold out. The regular version remains in pre-order phase. Both editions are limited to 750 each.

It’s just not fair. Not only do they have life-size Warthogs, they get to whip them out willy-nilly to use as backdrops for statue photos. Do you think that’s fair? Tell them it’s not fair.

They’ll probably listen to you. You griped about edition size, Weta Collectibles listened. Yes, there was the sharply reduced ES’s for Prince Caspian, but now they’ve truly gone off their Kiwi rockers and begun offering one-of-a-kinds.

The first auction for the edition-of-1 Sterling Silver Halo statues began tonight with the Master Chief and Grunts statue, and it’s gone swimmingly already with bids in excess $300 in under 2 hours. Yours truly was outbid several times already. If I were a rich man….
