Del Toro And Jackson To Knock On Bilbo’s Door

One fuzzy bespectacled visionary for another. That’s what is being reported by The Hollywood Reporter this morning, and fans being fans, are running with it as a done deal.
Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct back-to-back installments of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”….Principal photography for the films, which will be shot simultaneously, is tentatively set for 2009. The production budget is estimated at $150 million per film. The release of the first film is slated for 2010 and the second in 2011.
I’d be delighted should it come to pass. Guillermo was always my top choice in the instance that PJ were to decline the reins himself– and I’ve firmly suspected this would be the case ever since the big Hobbit announcement broke a month ago. It strikes me as even more exciting a prospect, to have a fresh cinematic take on Tolkien with Jackson’s hands still very much in the stew. This won’t -can’t- be less than anything of a collaboration; a double dose of geekiness straight to the veins
The mishmash of each director’s roster of players is salivating too– Doug Jones and Andy Serkis working together with Weta? Yes please. “You KNOW that Doug Jones is gonna be something awesome in this“, says Harry at AICN. Can’t argue with that.
Jackson and Del Toro are two peas in a mischievious movie-making pod. I can’t wait to see what emerges when they dip their collective hands into Gandalf’s wagon.

Silver lining? Here’s hoping…
This looks very promising…I think GDT is a very good director who has much potential for The Hobbit. I’m thinking the violence factor will be toned down a bit, at least it should be. The wait continues =)
I don’t know, but that’s par with me, here’s hoping the magic happens!
This is all fine and good, something I hope works out well for all involved, selfishly, I hope it works the best for us the fans. That means I want Shore and Fran and Phillipa and Howe and Lee and Weta and Miniatures people and bigatures people and costume lady and etc. etc.
And the beautiful New Zealand ’scapes of course, not like our Manny over on the Flame joking said “He’s shooting it in Mexico”! Bad Manny, bad Manny
I’ll eat my shoe if those things you mentioned aren’t a given.
Except Howard Shore, couldn’t see head to head with PJ even on Kong apparently, so who knows.
I like to believe the problems Shore & PJ faced on Kong were merely creative and artistic differences for their vision of King Kong and how the score should be. Meaning that concering LOTR/Hobbit they’ll see eye to eye again and will work together once more.
Im ecstatic with GDT for Director, I think its a wonderful choice and he’ll do the Hobbit great justice, plus PJ will be keeping very involved with the project no doubt so I dont think there’s much cause for worry.
