A History of Viggo

Note 1: I declined to post a ‘reference’ photo, as a single photo would not sufficiently represent Aragorn/Viggo as he appeared throughout the course of the trilogy– depending on costume, hair/makeup, expression, what he ate that morning, or a combination of.
Note 2: I tried to use stock company photos where possible- could not find a large enough image for Weta’s Elessar, so you get to see mine instead. Aren’t you lucky?

Its a bit of a line ball between Weta’s Aragorn @ BG and the new SS Aragorn PF. But I think I’d have to give it to Weta with Aragorn @ BG. If you get down low enough you can really see Viggo in that sculpt. In fact I was having a close look just recently and noticed for the first time the cleft in his chin. I almost thought it was a chip in the statue, since I never really notice it before. But then on also re-watching the films over christmas, sure enough I saw that his chin does look like that.
So while it took Weta 4 shots at it, I think they pretty well got him in the end.
Fun poll, but it almost seems like a forgone conclusion (although the few votes that Weta is getting would belie that).
The recently-announced Aragorn Premium Format from Sideshow is a stunning rendering of Mortensen to say the least. So much so that I ordered one, even after selling my Lurtz and swearing off the LOTR PF line. It’s just too good NOT to own.
There is something off-putting to me about the GG one, I don’t know. I’m surprised at the love it gets. However, it is easier to say that with the Aragorn PF now in perspective. I’m with Anthony- as the Weta BG was one of my favorites.
Out of all of these I have owned 3, but have seen them all ‘in person’, barring the PF. I have to say Weta has done the best collective stab at it, but no one piece quite singularly blew minds- that would have to go to Sideshow’s PF.
Btw, also have to give props to Trevor’s Helm’s Deep Aragorn. It’s by far the smallest out of all of these, but one of the better ones.
I like the Weta bust of our favorite tattooed killer or middle earth king if you like.
A PF rendition too good not to own? Hardly, I reserved that distinction to my self portraits only.

I went with Sideshow…and that’s only because they have the PF coming out…my 2nd choice would’ve been GG. But of course…the #1 represenation will soon belong to Mr. Song !
Not being able to view the SS PF in person yet, I chose GG bust, it *just* beats it out by a hair (reference intended), but I reserve the right to change my mind when I get the SS PF in hand.
Looking at the side-by-sides, the Weta bust holds up pretty well I think (and the SS 12″ looks horrid in that pic). And Chuck, you’re right…Viggo’s appearance changs from scene to scene it seems.

In most of the cases, it all depends on lighting and angles – and as I only got the Elessar statue myself, I have to make my judgment based on the given pictures.
1. Aragorn PF
2. GG bust
3. Aragorn @BG
4. Weta bust
FYI Charles, the Helms Deep dio was sculpted by Jeff Yagher, not good ol’ Trevor. Though I would love to see Trev tackle Viggo, he would certainly top the list in question!

Hm thats a hard one when you see them all up there. I mean the SS PF is easily the greatest of them all, but what about the horrid 12″. Its pretty close between Weta and SS for me. I think Weta were the most consistent of the bunch, but SS really hit it hard with the PF.
So SS wins:D
While all of the examples shown have certain elements of Mortensen’s likeness and are therefore recognizable, the oscar would have to go to Sideshow’s yet to be released Premium Format figure. The prototype, at least in my opinion, best captures the actor’s facial features. I have all of Weta’s Aragorns and they are among my most favorite pieces, but in all honesty I believe the new Aragorn PF will turn out to have the best portrait of Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn to date.

i think andy make the besht good likknes on aragorn….the oyhers just have a litle just a litle likennes..is a hard caracter i konw thta…but trevor crove or andy…or jeff yagher …i really really sure they can make a absoluty good work on him…also kile windrix….soooooooo…..what do you think…
