Sideshow Weta Elrond review
Elrond | Sculptor: Brigitte Wuest | Edition size: 2000 | product page

::Sculptural Quality::

It is a bit surprising that Weta decided to adopt the Last Alliance theme for the Elrond statue. As he spends most of his screen time in his Council garb, it would’ve been the safer, more logical choice. Thankfully they gave us this show-stopper instead. The graceful first age armor and Hadhafang made this truly a must-have. The stance is as stoic as you might expect from this Herald of Gil-Galad, looking composed and deadly with Hadhafang at the ready. Details are plentiful; the chainmail, the pendant around his neck, the intricate pattern on the scabbard are all fully dimensional. This could well have been the piece that initiated my love affair with Brigitte Wuest.

::Paint application::

Absolutely superb. The scheme of elven green and blue hues as they appeared in more lively times is striking and beautiful. It’s shocking how well the subtle gradation of green hue is applied to every ‘rung’ of the armour. Hadhafang here is done up in a reflective chrome. Herugrim on the Theoden piece by comparison is painted with a sort of dull silver. Both work well, but it’s a rather interesting, if not wholly explained difference. The elvish designs flowing throughout the armor are also painted on. His ’skirt’ (pardon my lack of a better term) is also marvelous looking, verdant with gold edging and leaf pattern mixture. All this is accented with a royal blue cloak, chainmail and leather- an impressive feast for the eyes.

::Parting Notes::

To this day, Elrond stands the lone statue representation of the Last Alliance. Elegant and powerful, and superior in nearly all aspects to its bust counterpart. An equal still does not exist in the collectibles world. A true highlight of the line.

    Detailing is sweet and it’s just plain purty ……….. can’t say that about too many.

    He’s packed away right now, as are a lot of my other goodies. But I eagerly await his glorious return.

    This is one of only a few other SSW pieces I must own eventually. Brigitte Wuest was always one of my favourite sculptors at Weta :D
